Can Exercise Get Rid of Axillary Breast Tissue?

 by Ruth de Jauregui

While you may think of breast tissue as being only on your chest, breast tissue can exist in other parts of your body, particularly in the axilla, or armpit. Like your breasts, this tissue reacts to your hormones during your monthly menstrual cycles and may swell and become painful.

While you may think of breast tissue as being only on your chest, breast tissue can exist in other parts of your body, particularly in the axilla, or armpit. Like your breasts, this tissue reacts to your hormones during your monthly menstrual cycles and may swell and become painful. While exercise may help with excess fat in the body, it can't completely get rid of axillary breast tissue.

Reduce the Size

While spot reduction is a myth, you can use exercise in conjunction with a healthy eating plan to reduce the overall amount of fat in your body. Because breast tissue is mainly made up of fat, your chest may show weight loss faster than other parts of your body -- a plus when you're trying to reduce the size of axillary breast tissue.

Lose Some Weight

To lose weight, begin with 30 minutes a day of aerobic exercise. Walking, swimming and bicycling are all low-impact exercises that burn calories. Add a low-calorie eating plan that reduces your daily calorie intake by 500 calories, and you should begin losing weight at a healthy 1- to 2-pound rate per week. A variety of exercises that work the chest and upper arms, such as chest presses, curls and pushups, build up your muscles and may help minimize the appearance of the axillary breast tissue.
