The NSAIDs have no effect on curing diseases, but exert their effect by controlling the symptoms of diseases while the person stays on the medications.
Identify the underlying mechanisms of Celebrex or ibuprofen. According to "Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics," these NSAIDs exert their actions on the enzyme systems cyclooxygenase -1 or COX-1 and cyclooxygenase -2 or COX-2. Ibuprofen inhibits both COX-1 and COX-2; whereas Celebrex impedes only COX-2.
Determine if a condition exists that would benefit from the actions of Celebrex or ibuprofen. "Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses" indicates that both drugs produce effective treatment of pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel disease and ankylosing spondylitis. Celebrex also helps in the management of colorectal polyps and menstrual cramps.

Take ibuprofen two to three times a day in oral doses of 200 to 800 mg to treat arthritic and other conditions. According to "Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics," the over-the-counter ibuprofen tablet works on the enzymes called COX-1 that causes stomach ulceration and COX-2 inhibitors that blocks the substance, prostaglandin, the chemical produced by the body that causes pain and inflammation.
Take Celebrex one to two times a day in oral doses of 100 to 400 mg to treat arthritic and other conditions. Celebrex requires a prescription from a health care provider. The Mayo Clinic reports that the oral Celebrex capsule works only on COX-2 inhibitors to block the chemicals producing pain and inflammation in disease conditions.

Watch for any side effects of the ibuprofen or Celebrex drugs. Common side effects of ibuprofen include gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding; whereas, Celebrex produces allergic reactions, heart attack and stroke in some individuals. If side effects occur, the individual needs to seek emergency medical care.
