You can control most of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, with medication, diet and lifestyle changes, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. The most common symptoms of the condition include gas, bloating, cramping and diarrhea. These side effects often accompany loud, embarrassing stomach noises.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains caffeine that often triggers gas and bloating. Avoid drinking caffeine in coffee, tea and soft drinks, and reduce or eliminate chocolate from your diet. Dark chocolate typically contains higher levels of caffeine than milk chocolate. Since IBS symptoms vary among individuals, experiment to find out what kinds of foods cause your symptoms.

Milk

If you are lactose intolerant, you could develop IBS, advises the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. The lactose in milk and dairy products is a common trigger for the cramps and bubbling that occur in your stomach. To relieve symptoms while providing your body with sufficient calcium, try eating yogurt, which contains enzymes that promote smoother digestion. The probiotics in yogurt also might help to heal the underlying cause of your IBS.

Wheat

Wheat and foods that contain gluten might produce the same symptoms as IBS. Celiac disease or even a very mild case of gluten intolerance causes stomach grumbling similar to that of IBS. In addition to wheat, rye and barley also contain gluten. Besides IBS symptoms, celiac disease or gluten intolerance causes headache and fatigue.

Legumes and More

Beans cause gas, which often accompanies loud stomach noises. If the body doesn't properly digest the carbohydrates in beans, gas builds up. When you don't pass the gas through belching or flatulence, your stomach grumbles and you experience pain.

Other carbohydrates that trigger gas pains and stomach grumbling include broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce and Brussels sprouts. Various fruits such as apples, pears and peaches also might prove to be triggers for your sensitive bowels. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy could cause you to ingest too much air, leading to a buildup of pressurized air in your stomach and loud noises.

Fried Foods

Processed food that's high in trans fatty acids could prove to be your downfall. The fats in donuts, pastries and other commercially prepared baked goods have the potential to cause acid reflux and irritate your stomach. Donuts usually are fried, adding to the fatty substances that lead to gas and constipation. Other fried foods that might trigger the bloating and gas that create embarrassing stomach sounds include margarine, onion rings and French fries.
