In addition to FDA-approved hair-loss treatments -- such as finasteride pills or the topical application of minoxidil -- you can turn to shampoos, conditioners and creams to help restore thinning hair. The Nioxin product line was introduced in 1987, and it encompasses a range of shampooing and styling products that rely on many natural ingredients, such as white tea extract, peppermint oil, amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants. Because Nioxin works as a system of hair-care treatments, usage instructions vary per individual product.

Step 1

Rinse your hair thoroughly in the shower, and apply a dime- to quarter-sized dab of Nioxin cleanser to your palm. Rub your hands lightly together, and massage the cleanser into your scalp, working your way from the scalp to the ends of your hair. Gently massage for about a minute, working up a thick lather, and rinse your hair thoroughly. Repeat the application and rinse as necessary.

Step 2

Work a thin coat of Nioxin Scalp Therapy conditioner from the roots of your hair to the tips after rinsing out the Nioxin Cleanser. Allow the product to be absorbed for at least one minute, and then rinse thoroughly. Pat your hair dry with a clean towel.

Step 3

Squeeze a dime-sized amount of Nioxin Hair Booster onto your still-damp hair before you style it, targeting your hairline. Dab the Hair Booster around your scalp near your hairline, using your fingertips, and then use your fingers to push the product back through the rest of your hair.

Step 4

Part your hair and spray Nioxin Scalp Treatment directly onto your exposed scalp. Continue to part your hair and spray the Treatment throughout the surface of your scalp, until you've treated your entire scalp with the product -- this takes about eight applications. Gently dab your scalp with your fingers on each application to encourage absorption and keep the treatment from dripping into your eyes. Comb your hair from root to tip to distribute the Scalp Treatment, then blow-dry and style your hair as usual.

Tip

Always read and follow any directions or warnings provided by Nioxin before using the company's products.

You can apply an optional Nioxin Diamax treatment to dry or damp hair just as you would apply Nioxin Scalp Treatment. According to the manufacturer, this product helps bolster your hair's thickness and increase its manageability. Nioxin also offers styling products such as texturizer, gel and hairspray; use these items as you would normal styling products.
