How Many Calories Are Burned with One Hour of Power Yoga?

You might associate yoga with calm movements and general relaxation, but you'd feel out of place carrying this belief into a power yoga class. This form of yoga provides a challenging workout for your entire body, typically with an emphasis on building strength, and isn't ideal for beginners.

You might associate yoga with calm movements and general relaxation, but you'd feel out of place carrying this belief into a power yoga class. This form of yoga provides a challenging workout for your entire body, typically with an emphasis on building strength, and isn't ideal for beginners. Add a couple hour-long power yoga classes to your weekly workout routine, and you'll build muscle as you burn calories. Consult your doctor before beginning this or any exercise regimen.

Increase Your Power

The website HealthStatus reports that power yoga burns calories at a moderate rate. A 130-pound person who practices this type of yoga for 60 minutes burns about 304 calories, notes the website. A 180-pound person, however, burns about 421 calories during the same hour-long class.

Other Forms of Yoga

Power yoga doesn't provide the fastest calorie burn you'll experience in a yoga class, but it's far from being the slowest, either. HealthStatus notes a 130-pound person burns about 164 calories during a 60-minute Hatha yoga class, 304 calories during a 60-minute Ashtanga yoga class and 515 calories during a 60-minute Vinyasa yoga class. In 60 minutes of each of the three forms of yoga, a 180-pound person burns 227, 421 and 713 calories, respectively.
