Lyrica (pregabalin) slows nerve impulses that may cause seizures and blocks nerve related pain. Lyrica can also fight symptomatic pain from the after-effects of shingles (herpes zoster), diabetic nerve damage and pain from fibromyalgia. A central nervous system depressant, Lyrica has a number of possible side effects, including effects on muscles and skin pain.

Ataxia

Lyrica can cause ataxia, a trembling or difficulty with muscle control and coordination. Problems with voluntary muscle movements like walking and reaching for objects can signal other likely difficulties. Mayo Clinic staff say ataxia sufferers may also have blurred vision, speech problems and difficulty swallowing.

Rash, Swelling

Lyrica may cause a series of severe allergic reactions including painful skin rash and itching. Possible side effects from the drug include hives, swelling of the mouth, lips, face and tongue. Swelling at the throat may cause difficulty breathing as well. The skin may also be stretched tight and become painful due to swelling and bloating of the hands, feet, or ankles (peripheral edema), according to Drugs.com.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Lyrica can cause peripheral neuropathy, which manifests as numbness and pain in your hands and feet. The pain of peripheral neuropathy feels like tingling or burning, according to Mayo Clinic staff. The numbness of the condition is said to feel like wearing gloves on your hands or thin socks on your feet.

Back Pain, Muscle Spasms

Patients taking Lyrica sometimes have muscle pain (myalgia) as a side effect due to muscle spasms and back pain. You may feel pain in your legs with muscle cramping, and in other muscle groups with generalized muscle spasms, according to Drugs.com. Muscle pain may be combined with muscle weakness (myasthenia) as well.

Skin Lesions, Ulcers

Lyrica may cause skin damage and pain beyond a mere rash or hives. Red skin lesions with a purple center may form a well. Mayo Clinic staff say you may have side effects like mouth sores and white spots on your mouth and lips. Mouth sores with a sore throat may also occur. Puffiness or swelling of the eyelids and in areas around the eyes may strike the sufferer as well as red, irritated eyes.
