Apranax (naproxen sodium) is a medication used to manage physical manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (pelvic and back arthritis), gout and tendinitis. Apranax is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that decreases pain, stiffness and inflammation. Typically, you will take 250 or 500 mg of Apranax two times a day, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Common Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, Apranax's common side effects include heartburn, drowsiness and ringing in the ears. Heartburn is usually the result of acid reflux, a condition in which your stomach acid backs up your digestive tract. Symptoms of heartburn include a burning sensation in your chest or throat and a sour taste in your mouth. Do not drive your car or participate in events that require you to be fully awake. Apranax can also cause red spots on your skin, fluid retention, constipation, stomach pain and dizziness. Tell your doctor when Apranax's common effects last for more than four days. He can change your dosage to prevent these side effects.

Serious Side Effects

The National Library of Medicine says that Apranax can increase your cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) clotting events. For example, Apranax can cause a heart attack or stroke. Physical manifestations of a heart attack include crushing chest pain that moves down your arm, sweating, shortness of breath and nausea. Physical manifestations of a stroke include sudden tingling and numbness of one side of your body and difficulty walking or speaking. Apranax can also provoke gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcer formation and perforation. Physical manifestations of gastrointestinal bleeding include black and bloody stools. Apranax can also cause high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a serious skin disease characterized by red blistering skin and widespread skin sloughing).

Additional Concerns

Avoid Apranax if you are allergic to naproxen sodium or any other NSAIDs. You may develop trouble breathing, and have tongue or throat swelling and hives. Drugs.com indicates that you avoid Apranax if you have liver or kidney disease. Apranax can cause fatigue, nausea, yellowing of the skin and flu-like symptoms. These are manifestations of liver inflammation. Avoid Apranax if you have heart disease or high blood pressure, as this can lead to fluid retention. Tell your doctor if you take captopril, warfarin, probenacid, methotrexate, naproxen, lithium or furosemide. Drugs.com says that these medications may decrease the effectiveness of Apranax and cause the aforementioned side effects.
