Is Rice Flour Gluten Free?

Receiving a diagnosis that your body is mildly sensitive to gluten or that you have celiac disease can be discouraging, especially if your diet includes lots of items that contain gluten such as bread and homemade baked goods.

Receiving a diagnosis that your body is mildly sensitive to gluten or that you have celiac disease can be discouraging, especially if your diet includes lots of items that contain gluten such as bread and homemade baked goods. You don't have to avoid these types of items altogether, but you must start choosing your foods carefully. Instead of consuming foods that contain the gluten protein, found in wheat, barley and rye, look for alternatives made with rice flour, or other flours that are gluten free.

Rice is Nice for Celiacs and Gluten Sensitivity

Rice flour does not contain gluten, according to the Colorado State University Extension and American Diabetes Association. Whether the flour is made from white or brown rice is irrelevant; neither ingredient has gluten. When purchasing rice flour to use in your baking, check the label carefully to ensure that the product is labeled as gluten free. Even though rice flour doesn't contain gluten, if the flour is processed in a plant that also produces wheat flour, it might contain slight amounts of gluten, limiting the manufacturer from claiming that the rice flour is gluten free.
