How Much Flax Seed Oil Should I Use Per Day?

 by Melodie Anne

Flax seed oil contains an omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid. Your body has to convert ALA into eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid -- EPA and DHA -- before it can be used. Flax seed oil may be helpful for reducing high cholesterol, minimizing inflammation and lowering your risk of heart disease.

Flax seed oil may be helpful for reducing high cholesterol, minimizing inflammation and lowering your risk of heart disease. Because the system of converting alpha-linolenic acid isn't very efficient, however, research is still mixed as to exactly how beneficial flax seed oil is for treating these conditions.

Daily Doses

Flax seed oil doesn't have a set recommended dosage. It really depends on how much EPA and DHA you have in your diet, as well as your overall health, but the general recommendation is 1 to 2 tablespoons per day. If you're taking flax seed oil capsules, take one to two each day, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends. Your doctor will have to give you an exact dosage to suit your body's requirements, however. Taking too much flax seed oil can inhibit the absorption of medications, supplements and nutrients.
