Identification

You can find caffeine naturally in products such as coffee, tea and chocolate. It's a synthetic additive in sodas, pain relievers and energy drinks. When consumed, caffeine makes you feel more awake because it stimulates the central nervous system.

Function

When you consume caffeine, it can make you feel different. Typically, this occurs in the form of feeling more alert and perhaps having an improved mood. Having between 200 and 300 mg of caffeine per day should not do you any harm unless you have sensitivity to it. Otherwise, you should feel awake and filled with energy.

Hand Tremors and Side Effects

If you go over 300 mg of caffeine a day, you might experience some negative side effects. Likewise, if you are sensitive to caffeine or have no tolerance for it, you might experience effects even though you consumed less. Side effects of too much caffeine can include anxiety, rapid heartbeat, stomach irritation and headaches. However, you can also feel jittery and suffer from hand tremors, says TeensHealth from Nemours. This can be unnerving and cause for concern, especially if the tremors don't go away within a few hours.

Precautions

If you notice you have trembling or jittery hands after having caffeine, there is a simple solution: cut back on caffeine consumption. If you already have very little caffeine each day, you may have no tolerance for it. You might need to eliminate it from your diet to prevent the tremors and other unpleasant symptoms. For most, however, moderation is the key to ingesting caffeine side effect free.
