Powdered milk is very popular with people that have strict financial budgets, for use in recipes and to enhance nutritional value of foods for children and adults. However, there are many different benefits and drawbacks when using powdered milk. Therefore, people considering using powdered milk should understand exactly what some of the negative and positive aspects are so that they can be sure that this is something they want to try.

Pro: Cost-Effective

One pro of using powdered milk is that it can be very cost-effective for families that need to stretch their dollars. Since powdered milk can be mixed up as needed it is less likely to go bad or be unused. This reduces the amount of waste that occurs as compared to regular milk.

Con: Taste

One major con of using powdered milk is the taste of it. Some people say that the taste is very different from that of regular milk making it difficult for a person to tolerate. Using powdered milk in the morning cereal may be less than appetizing to some people. However, when used in recipes it is rarely suspected.

Pro: Lactose Intolerance

In the past, powdered milk was not for people who were lactose tolerant. However, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, there is now a low lactose powdered milk formula. The low lactose formula was originally developed in 1995 for military personnel who had requested help for their soldiers that were lactose intolerant.

Con: Mixes Poorly

Powdered milk does not always mix well. Sometimes the mixture will appear lumpy and this can make it appear very unappetizing. Because of its lumpy appearance, children and adults have difficulty drinking it and may even refuse to drink it. For a family with children that cannot afford regular milk, this can become a problem and even affect a child's nutrition.

Pro: Nutrition

Powdered milk also has the same vitamins and minerals that you would find in regular milk. According to the Arthritis Foundation, powdered milk can be used as a supplement because it can easily be mixed into drinks, shakes, puddings and even gravies to help provide extra calcium for people needing a supplement.
