Whether you drink almond milk because you're lactose intolerant or because you prefer the taste, it's an excellent source of nutrients including protein, calcium, iron, vitamin E and heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. If you prefer almond milk from scratch, whip up a batch using raw nuts, water and a blender. Although almond milk is high in fat, it's a relatively low-calorie beverage.
Making Almond Milk
It is very easy to make almond milk. Soak raw almonds in water overnight, then drain and rinse them in the morning. Whiz them together with a couple of cups of water in the blender until the liquid is smooth and frothy. You may or may not wish to strain the pulp with a cheese cloth. Eight ounces of almond milk has around 70 calories, with 22.5 calories from fat.
Sweet Additions
Almonds are naturally sweet and it's healthiest to drink the milk plain. If you do decide to add a sweetener, your calorie count will increase. A teaspoon of honey or sugar has just over 10 calories, for instance. If you want flavor without as many calories, try adding a drop of vanilla extract.
